BRIEM SENTENCED TO 10-YEAR STRUCTURED TERM IN JANUARY SPEEDWAY SHOOTING CASE
BEDFORD, IN — The high-profile felony case against 19-year-old Talon R. Briem, stemming from a January 2026 gas station gunfire incident, has concluded in Lawrence Superior Court 1. On September 30, 2026, Judge John M. Plummer III accepted a negotiated plea agreement and executed a 10-year structured commitment order combining state prison time, electronic home monitoring, and supervised probation.
Briem, whose address is listed in Orleans, IN (DOB: 04/06/2007), was represented by defense attorney Timothy Sledd. Lawrence County Prosecutor Samuel C. Arp II represented the State of Indiana.
THE BACKSTORY: January Speedway Shooting Incident
The charges stem from an altercation that unfolded on the evening of January 5, 2026:
- The Shooting: Around 9:46 p.m., a verbal confrontation broke out at the Speedway gas station at State Road 37 and US 50 West in Bedford between occupants of an SUV and two individuals standing near another vehicle.
- Gunfire: As the SUV pulled away traveling southbound on State Road 37, Briem—a passenger in the vehicle—discharged a handgun toward the two individuals. Bullets struck the victims' vehicle and gas station pumps. No injuries were reported.
- The Arrest: Deputies from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by the Orleans Police Department and Orange County Sheriff’s Office, located the suspects overnight, leading to Briem’s apprehension on January 6.
PLEA AGREEMENT & DISMISSALS
(Cause No. 47D01-2601-F1-000037)
Briem was originally charged with four Level 1 felonies: two counts of Attempted Murder and two counts of Conspiracy to Commit Attempted Murder.
Under the negotiated plea agreement accepted by the court, the State formally dismissed all four Level 1 Felony Attempted Murder counts and a secondary handgun charge. Briem pled guilty to three amended offenses:
- Count V (Pled Guilty): Criminal Recklessness — Shooting a firearm into an occupied vehicle or inhabited dwelling, a Level 5 Felony.
- Count VI (Pled Guilty): Pointing a Firearm at Another, a Level 6 Felony.
- Count VIII (Pled Guilty): Obstruction of Justice, a Level 6 Felony.
SENTENCE BREAKDOWN & COMMITMENT TERMS
Judge Plummer sentenced Briem to a total term of 10 years, structured as follows:
- Count V (Level 5 Felony): 6 years committed to the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC).
- Count VI (Level 6 Felony): 2 years committed to the IDOC, to run consecutively to Count V.
- Count VIII (Level 6 Felony): 2 years committed to the IDOC, to run consecutively to Counts V and VI.
- Suspended Sentence & Electronic Monitoring: 4 years of the 10-year aggregate sentence were suspended. Judge Plummer ordered that upon completion of his executed IDOC sentence, Briem must serve 3 years on electronic monitoring / home detention through Lawrence County Community Corrections in lieu of further incarceration.
- Credit Time: Briem received credit for 268 actual days served in confinement.
- Supervised Probation: 2 years of the suspended sentence will be served on supervised probation following release.
