🏛️ COMMISSIONERS MEETING: Lawrence County Jail Upgrades Digital Systems and Adds On-Site Inmate Dental Care 🏛️

During this morning’s meeting, the Lawrence County Board of Commissioners approved two significant proposals presented by Sheriff Greg Day aimed at modernizing jail operations, improving health services, and reducing county transportation costs.

Here is a full breakdown of both approvals made by county officials:

1. Adoption of "INjail" Statewide Management System

The Sheriff’s Department received commissioner approval to transition the jail’s software to INjail, a statewide data and facility management platform developed by the Indiana Office of Court Technology.

  • Zero Cost to Taxpayers: The software adoption comes at no cost to Lawrence County, as it is fully funded through state and federal grant programs.
  • Unified State Network: The system connects local county detention facilities across Indiana into a single digital database, streamlining communication between jails, courts, and local prosecutors.
  • Integrated Databases: INjail links directly with state criminal justice tools, including the Indiana State Police Criminal History Repository (CHRIS), the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), and court case management systems (Odyssey).
  • Enhanced Safety & Tracking: The system eliminates isolated data silos, helping staff flag unreadable fingerprints for immediate re-takes and alerting officers if an inmate scheduled for release has active holds or warrants in other jurisdictions.

2. On-Site Inmate Dental Services Approved

Commissioners also approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Quality Correctional Care (QCC) to deliver dedicated, on-site dental treatment for inmates housed at the Lawrence County Jail.

  • Filling a Service Gap: The agreement resolves an ongoing healthcare challenge at the jail after previous efforts to secure dental coverage through local community practices were unsuccessful.
  • On-Site Medical Delivery: Under the MOU, Indiana-based QCC will provide licensed dental professionals and registered dental assistants to perform routine clinical care, necessary treatments, and pain relief directly inside the secure jail facility.
  • Fee Structure: Rather than a fixed flat-rate contract, the Sheriff’s Department will be billed on a fee-for-service basis as care is provided.
  • Reduced Costs & Security Risks: Providing care on-site eliminates the high security risks, staffing burdens, and transportation expenses required to escort inmates off-site to outside dental clinics.

The Bottom Line

Both measures focus on streamlining operations at the county jail—using state grant funding to modernize digital criminal justice records while handling healthcare needs internally to keep transport costs down and public safety high.
