COUNTY ROUNDUP: COMMISSIONERS ADVANCE INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS, OFFICER WELLNESS APP, AND REDEVELOPMENT MEETING

BEDFORD, IN β€” A busy Tuesday session for the Lawrence County Commissioners brought movement on several key county initiatives, including long-awaited bridge replacements, law enforcement wellness resources, and facility maintenance contracts. Meanwhile, county redevelopment officials have slated a meeting later this week to discuss industrial site upkeep.

Here is a breakdown of the latest official actions across Lawrence County government:

Bridge 172 Replacement & Highway Operations

Highway Superintendent Brian Sowder informed the commissioners that physical work is moving forward to replace Bridge 172 on Cement Plant Road. The closed, historic 1909 reinforced concrete bridge over Leatherwood Creek has created safety concerns by forcing emergency response vehicles traveling toward the Virgil I. Grissom Municipal Airport onto lengthy detours.

  • Federal Funding: The replacement project is backed by $305,023.30 in federal funding, with CLR Construction handling the full structural replacement and road realignment.
  • Historic Preservation: Because the structure qualified for the National Register of Historic Places, a Section 106 review allowed the county to seek proposals for salvaging or reusing its historic elements.
  • Road Work & Local Landmarks: Highway crews are finishing paving along Oak Street East and Oak Street West. Maintenance teams are also actively preparing the historic Williams Covered Bridge for the annual "Dinner on the Bridge" event this Saturday.

Officer Mental Health Program Approved

Major Brandon Blackwell presented a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to adopt the Magnus One Wellness Program for the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department. The mobile platform delivers peer support and mental health resources specifically tailored to first responders.

  • Zero Initial Taxpayer Cost: Year one is completely grant-funded. If the department chooses to renew the service after the trial period, the $7,500 annual fee will be funded through inmate commissary revenue rather than county general funds.

Elevator Maintenance & Veterans Affairs Support

Commissioners also approved two operational agreements during Tuesday's meeting:

  • Elevator Maintenance Contract: Awarded to Elevator One for ongoing maintenance, testing, and repairs across elevators in both the main Courthouse and the Courthouse Plaza.
  • Veterans Affairs Equipment Purchase: Approved a $534.77 equipment bid for VetraSpec, a claims-management system used by the Lawrence County Veterans Affairs Office to assist local military veterans with benefits filings.

Redevelopment Commission to Review Shell Building Contract

The Lawrence County Redevelopment Commission will meet Thursday, September 10, at 10:00 a.m. in Courthouse Room 28. Officials will review an update on the county's industrial shell building facility and evaluate a proposed maintenance agreement with 4 Seasons LLC, alongside financial claims and executive session discussions.
