FULL REPORT: Arrest Made in Bedford Stabbing Investigation That Hospitalized Two

BEDFORD, Ind. โ€” A 65-year-old Bedford man has been taken into custody and faces multiple felony charges, including attempted murder, following a stabbing incident Sunday evening that left two victims hospitalized.

The charges stem from an emergency response that began just before 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, when dispatches indicated a stabbing near 17th and G Streets in Bedford. A second victim was located a short distance away near 17th and H Streets shortly afterward. Emergency medical responders from Monroe County were requested via mutual aid to assist Lawrence County units on the scene.

Following the incident, online confusion briefly surfaced after an automated scanner-scraping app mistakenly reported an incident at Bloomington's College Mall. Regional reports quickly corrected the alert, clarifying that while mutual-aid standby units had been near College Mall, the actual crime scene was in Bedford.

Medical Condition of Victims In an official statement released to Lawrence County Independent News and Public Records, Bedford Police Chief Terry Moore confirmed that both individuals suffered apparent stab wounds and were transported to Methodist Hospital on Sunday night for treatment. As of late Sunday night, both victims were listed in stable condition and were expected to recover from their injuries.

Suspect Taken Into Custody Chief Moore confirmed Tuesday that detectives have arrested William E. Melvin II, 65, of Bedford, in connection with the incident. Melvin has been preliminary charged with:

  • Attempted Murder
  • Aggravated Battery
  • Battery with a Deadly Weapon

Detectives with the Bedford Police Department are continuing to finalize their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the altercation.

Chief Moore reiterated that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
