ISP SWAT and K-9 Deploy to Apprehend Armed Bedford Man After Relative Threatened with Firearm
A 50-year-old Bedford man is being held without bond in the Lawrence County Jail after allegedly pointing a loaded gun at a family member and attempting to barricade himself inside his home on Wednesday afternoon.
Vitaly Kapanzhi, 50, of Bedford, was taken into custody following a coordinated response by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police SWAT team.
Armed Encounter and 911 Response
At approximately 1:57 p.m. on Wednesday, Lawrence County dispatch received an emergency 911 call reporting that Kapanzhi had pointed a loaded firearm at a female family member. Kapanzhi allegedly threatened to kill her if she did not immediately leave his property, prompting the woman to flee the residence and call for help.
Sheriff's deputies were familiar with Kapanzhi due to previous mental health episodes over the past several years. Just one day prior, deputies had successfully de-escalated an incident where Kapanzhi was reportedly armed and threatening self-harm. During that previous call, deputies ensured family members were removed to a safe location to allow Kapanzhi time to stabilize after he refused treatment.
On Wednesday, the female family member returned to the home without law enforcement's knowledge, where she was immediately met at gunpoint. Responding deputies established surveillance around the residence and coordinated with the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office to obtain felony arrest warrants.
SWAT Standoff & K-9 Apprehension
Recognizing the danger of an armed suspect with a prior history of resisting officers, the Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of ISP SWAT for specialized equipment, armor, and crisis negotiators:
- Driveway Confrontation: SWAT operators located Kapanzhi along his driveway and issued multiple commands to surrender peacefully. Kapanzhi refused to comply.
- Barricade Prevention: As Kapanzhi began retreating toward the house—which would have created a high-risk barricade situation—officers deployed less-lethal rounds. When he continued moving toward the residence, an ISP police K-9 was deployed.
- Custody: The K-9 subdued Kapanzhi, allowing officers to secure him without the use of lethal force.
Kapanzhi was transported to IU Health for treatment of minor dog bites before being booked into the Lawrence County Jail. A subsequent search warrant was executed at the property, and all firearms inside the residence were seized by law enforcement.
Statement from Sheriff Greg Day
Sheriff Greg Day commended the patience and tactical restraint exercised by all responding personnel:
“Everyone involved in this incident demonstrated the utmost of restraint and patience, attempting time and time again to de-escalate and get Mr. Kapanzhi treatment. Even after a criminal offense was committed, each agency utilized outstanding tactics to ensure the best possible outcome, short of compliance, for Mr. Kapanzhi, while also keeping the brave men and women in law enforcement as safe as possible in an extremely dangerous situation.”
